Funding woes close Family Resources

Murphy – For more than 20 years, Family Resources of Cherokee County has helped connect families to services they need. However, on Friday the nonprofit agency closed due to a lack of funding.
The board of directors voted to dissolve the organization on June 3. Chairwoman Donna Golson said she was devastated.
“It’s sad,” she said. “We regret this has taken place. We didn’t want it to happen.”
Golson and other members joined the six-person board on March 25, shortly after the previous director resigned on March 13. They soon learned the organization had been in the red for a long time.
The board and staff worked diligently to turn the finances around, while continuing to serve families through the coronavirus pandemic, she added. Then they lost a grant from the Department of Social Services for 2020-21, a major part of their funding.
“Without that funding, it was impossible,” Golson said. “We did everything we could.”
She said all financial obligations of the organization will be paid. As a nonprofit, the organization must transfer all assets and remaining funds to other nonprofits in the state. She has been in contact with New Hope Ministries, REACH and Smart Start.
“Hopefully, it will still benefit families in the community,” Golson said.
Interim director Rachael Hall said families needing services should get in contact with their case workers or DSS, the local Smart Start program through Region A Partnership for Children or Community Connections at Murphy Presbyterian Church.
