SBI helps investigate Martins Creek blaze
Martins Creek – A rooster pecked through the charred remains of a residential mobile home Monday morning. A few hours prior, firefighters had found a deceased woman in the property while battling a blaze.
“It doesn’t appear to be suspicious at this time, but we have the [State Bureau of Investigation] on scene to err on the side of caution,” Cherokee County sheriff’s Chief Deputy Joe Wood said.
Officials from several agencies responded to the blaze on Old Farm Road around 3 a.m. and found the trailer fully engulfed in flames. Officials say a neighbor who may have awakened to use the restroom overnight called dispatch to report the fire.
Firefighters knocked down the blaze in less than 10 minutes with about 6,000 gallons of water. Officials believe the occupant had already perished by the time the fire was reported.
The victim has not been positively identified as of the Cherokee Scout’s press time Tuesday morning. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
