Murphy – Nantahala Regional Libraries are open for express use after being closed for almost one year during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Franklin Shook, director of Nantahala Regional Libraries, said the libraries are taking all precautions to stay in compliance with the Cherokee County Health Department and the governor’s executive orders.
All of the Nantahala Regional Libraries closed on March 16, 2020, due to the coronavirus shutdown and opened again for curbside pickup on May 27, 2020.
In September 2020, the libraries allowed in-person browsing and internet usage by appointment only. Between patrons being inside the library, staff would clean and disinfect surfaces.
On March 8, Nantahala Regional Libraries opened their doors to patrons with some precautions. Patrons can browse for 30 minutes and use the computers for 1 hour at a time.
Patrons are asked to follow guidelines when visiting the libraries.
- The libraries require all users be screened before they begin using services.
- Masks covering nose/mouth required at all times.
- Users must sanitize hands at the door when entering
- Temperature checks must be done at the door when entering.
- Seating provided only for computer use.
- No children are to be left unattended.
- Bathrooms are closed.
“We are very excited to expand our services and hours,” Shook said. “We’ve always been proud of the services we offer to the public and are glad to make that available again.”
Hours of operation and locations for all four of the Nantahala Regional Libraries can be found at nrlibrary.org. Patrons can also browse books online and place holds to then be picked up at the library.
If students or members of the community need the library for longer than the time limit, they are asked to call in advance for accommodations.
