Texana – For the first time in nearly 30 years, the Texana Community Development Club will not host a Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. Prayer Breakfast on his birthday.
Club President Eurial Turner said they decided not to hold the event due to the pandemic, the close quarters of the center’s space and rising COVID-19 case numbers in the area.
“We’re disappointed, but understand under the circumstances,” Turner said. “We want to err on the side of safety this year.”
He added they may do something later in the year, but plan to continue the tradition next year. This would have been the 29th year of the breakfast.
“We hope to get back on track next year,” Turner said.
The breakfast, while celebrating King, is also one of the biggest fundraisers for the club. Funds raised support the center’s utility bills as well as its community activities, like providing food for a family in need or offering a safe place for local students to access the internet. The club already was approved for a grant through Dogwood Health Trust, which he said will help.
“We’re going to survive,” Turner said.
