Sondra Newton, 79, of Marble, passed away Thursday, Jan. 12, 2023, in a Murphy hospital.
Sondra was a native of Rockingham County, N.C., and lived in Gastonia, N.C., for many years before moving to Cherokee County in 1984.
She was a hairdresser for several years, retiring in 2020.
Sondra was a member of MountainView Church.
She was the daughter of the late Jasper Patrick and Doris McKenzie Hamilton. She was also preceded in death by a sister, Margaret “Christine” Hamilton Mingus.
Surviving are her husband of more than 62 years, L.C. Newton; two sons, Mitchell Jay Newton and wife Susan of Marble and Randall Carl Newton and wife Kelly of Dallas, N.C.; a brother, Edgar Luther Hamilton and wife Rachel of Gastonia; four grandchildren, Hagan Newton and wife Morgan, and Chase Newton, all of Marble, Erika Pham and husband Patrick of Dallas, and Nick Newton and Tiffany of Charlotte, N.C.; and eight great-grandchildren, Ryder Pham, Dawson Newton, Lyric Pham, Axel Pham, Elljay Newton, Emerson Newton, Laurie Newton and Abby Newton.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 16, in the chapel of Ivie Funeral Home, Murphy, with the Revs. Jeff Owens, Chris West, Mike Crowe and Alan Wildsmith officiating. Music was provided by the Revs. Jeff Owens and Chris West and Luke Hamilton. Sign language was provided by Holly Morgan. The interment was in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers were Nick Newton, Hagan Newton, Chase Newton, Kyle Newton, Garrett Newton and Patrick Pham.
The family received friends from 6-8 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 15, at Ivie Funeral Home, Murphy.
Ivie Funeral Home, Murphy, was in charge of all arrangements.
