Monroe sounds tornado sirens

Residents Thursday night likely heard tornado sirens, even though there was no tornado warning in place. Monroe County (Tenn.) Emergency Services addressed the issue Friday on Facebook, saying an alert for Murphy prompted them to turn on the sirens.

Monroe County Emergency Services said people in the Tellico area received cell phone alerts about a tornado warning in North Carolina, because that area is close to Monroe.

“Because the safety of the citizens in his town and the safety of all the citizens that we serve is the number one priority for us both the decision was made to sound the sirens,” officials said.

Monroe County did see a severe thunderstorm warning, however.
