After spending 19 years working with the Cherokee County Register of Deeds office, Karen Wright feels qualified to take over the leadership position.
“To be the most qualified, you need to have experience and knowledge of the N.C. laws and general statues that govern this office,” she said. “I have acquired the knowledge and experience over the years to be able to run this office effectively and efficiently on a day-to-day basis.”
Wright used her nearly two decades of service within the office to expand her knowledge base.
“While working in this office, I have attended educational workshops, had lots of training on our current programs we use every day,” she said.
Wright believes the person voted into the position must be knowledgeable, detailed-inclined and accurate.
“The staff and the Register of Deeds have an important role in making sure these records are put on file correctly and obeying the laws that our state make us follow,” she said.
If elected, her first priority is to hire a new employee. Wright is determined to choose someone who exhibits the abilities required for the office.
“It takes time to get new employees trained on all the required tasks we perform and to get them to be able to understand the liability aspect of performing tasks efficiently and correctly,” he said.
Additionally, she wants to, within budget, focus on technology. Wright said.
“Our office will strive to keep our programs and payment services up to date with the latest technology that our budget allows,” she said. “I will be working closely with the commissioners to ensure we have the most current technology in our office that is affordable for the Register of Deeds.”
Wright is not afraid to branch outside the county Information Technology department to ensure the office is up to date on technological issues as well as cyber security.
When not hustling in the office, Wright enjoys time outdoors. Her favorite activity has to do with her 5-year old grandson.
“He brings so much joy to me,” she said, “and if I’m having a bad day, being with him helps me to forget about my problems.”
