Bellview Resting on 25 green and lush acres in western Cherokee County sits Cobb Creek Cabins.
The new owners are Collin and Jennifer Cordell, previously of Lake Lanier, Ga. The couple, who have been married for four years, purchased the real estate gem two months ago.
The six Cobb Creek Rental Cabins come with far more than just a cozy place to eat and sleep while visiting the mountains. Cobb Creek Cabins’ rich history dates back to 1861 and the grandparents of Major League Baseball legend Ty Cobb. The Cordells also said the original home is one of only four pre-Civil War structures remaining in western North Carolina.
The business office is part of the house that was owned by Cobb’s grandparents. The walls of the tiny home were made of heavy timber, pounded and placed by
hand. Back then, the family lived in the single room together, and the bathroom was outside. The family’s original water well and smokehouse are still on the property.
There is old equipment in different areas of the property that belonged to the Cobb family. The property has been owned by four different families, including the Cobbs, since 1861, and an old baseball bat was found while previous owners were excavating part of the area.
The Cordells have adopted several animals for visitors to the cabins to enjoy. They own several alpaca, a couple of donkeys, a group of chickens and some young Nigerian dwarf goats.
The property also contains several blueberry, apple, pear, peach, cherry and pecan trees, a nice surprise for guests who want the tasty treats with their breakfast in the morning. The sound of the creek and its cool running waters make it both fun and relaxing for those who visit.
“We offer a total experience – history, farming and relaxation,” Jennifer said.
The John Franklin Cobb house was entered on The National Register of Historical Places in 1984.
Ty Cobb memorabilia is peppered along walls in various rooms. Additions and upgrades have been added to the old property, but the feel of nostalgia is always present.
The Cobb family’s famous member, Tyrus “Ty” Cobb, used to play baseball as a teenager with adults in Andrews and Murphy. His aunt would take him to Murphy to play by way of wagon.
Cobb, who was born in 1886 and died in 1961, became the first member of the Major League Baseball Hall of Fame after an exceptional career with the Detroit Tigers and Philadelphia Athletics. The left-handed center fielder, who famously held the bat with his hands apart instead of together, retired with 4,189 hits and 897 stolen bases, both career records at the time.
