April is Child Abuse Awareness Month. It’s sad on the surface that we even have to have such a month, yet every year more children find themselves suffering.
That’s where HAVEN – Hope for Abuse Victims through Education & Nurturing – comes in. The nonprofit Children’s Advocacy Center in Peachtree is dedicated to supporting children and families affected by child abuse, sexual assault and human trafficking.
Established in 2005, the organization provides a coordinated, child-friendly response to allegations of abuse, aiming to reduce trauma for victims while strengthening the prosecution of offenders. The center’s primary mission is to reduce the trauma of violence committed against children, educate the community for prevention and hold offenders accountable.
HAVEN serves hundreds of children annually in Cherokee and Clay counties, offering a safe space where children can share their experiences and begin a “healing journey.” The organization utilizes a multidisciplinary team approach, bringing together professionals from law enforcement, the District Attorney’s Office, Department of Social Services and medical providers to streamline investigations and avoid further victimization of the child.
While HAVEN receives some grants, the nonprofit also counts on contributions from the community.
