HL Mintz, 79, of Andrews, passed away Monday,  Nov. 8, 2021, in Four Oaks, N.C.
HL was born in Murphy  to Ben William and Emma Jane Allen Mintz.
He was a long-standing member of McClelland Cove Baptist Church.
He attended Andrews High School, graduating in 1960. He was a proud member of the 1958 and 1959 Andrews High School football teams. As a part of the 1958 State Championship team, he was inducted into the Andrews High School Athletic Hall of Fame.
He was a lifelong mechanic. He worked with his beloved father, Ben, at Andrews Exxon (Esso).
After Ben retired, HL continued to serve the community at the station and his auto shop until the early 2000s. He then worked nine years for the State of North Carolina DOT until he retired in 2009.
HL was an avid hunter and fisherman, and celebrated camp cook. He treasured his hunting and fishing family and the time they spent together. He had a host of stories to share of his escapades, many of which may or may not have been exaggerated. Slick Rock, Hooper Bald, Tellico and Standing Indian were some of his favorite places, along with lakes Nantahala, Hiawassee, Fontana and Santeetlah. He enjoyed NASCAR and watching westerns.
In work, his mission was serving the community and he recalled his patrons with fondness.
As his health failed, he was ever grateful for the ways the community assisted him through family, friends, the Truett Baptist Association, many area churches and the N.C. Baptists on Mission.
HL is survived by his cherished wife of 60 years, Charlotte Wall Mintz; his precious fur baby, Jorja; his children, Eric Mintz (Nyoka) of Buford, Ga., Melynda Koon (Chris) of Simpsonville, S.C., and Marjorie Forster (Kirk) of Four Oaks, N.C.; his grandchildren, Erinn Mintz, Casey Beise (Brad), Ben Mintz, Savanna Phillips (Jakob), Tanner Koon (Allie), Sawyer Koon, Duncan Forster (Katelyn) and Dalton Forster; his great-grandchildren, Zoey Miller, Harper Beise and Judah Phillips; his sisters, Shirley Almond (Carroll), Cathy Wilson and Margaret Grindstaff (Bobby); his brother, Vernon Mintz (Janie); and his many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents and his brothers, Wayne, Berlin and Hal.
A memorial service will be held in Andrews at a later date.
HL loved his family and friends dearly. We will miss him more than words can express. He was thankful for the gift of Salvation that Jesus provides and he is now celebrating that salvation in the presence of our Lord.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made in HL’s memory to any of the following: McClelland Cove Baptist Church of Andrews, N.C.; Truett Baptist Association of Marble, N.C.; or N.C. Baptists on Mission of Cary, N.C.
