    Clarence Thomas Barnett, 93, of Murphy, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 31, 2021, in a Murphy hospital.
    He was a native and lifetime resident of Cherokee County.
    Clarence worked for the North Carolina Department of Transportation for 44 years, retiring as a county maintenance supervisor. He also worked as a mechanic for many people in the area.
    Clarence was a faithful member of Peachtree Memorial Baptist Church.
    He was a devoted dirt track race fan who had not missed many races at Tri-County since it opened.
    Clarence had a love for horses and had broken, ridden and raised horses from a young age.
    He was the son of the late Sam and Jessie Mae Smith Barnett, and husband of the late Jenell Green Barnett, who died Nov. 25, 2014. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Franklin Barnett.
    Surviving are a daughter, Glenda Oliver and husband Jerry of Murphy; two sons, Glenn Barnett and wife Tinky and Joe Barnett and wife Dena, all of Murphy; four sisters, Ruth Shields, Geneva Setser, Opal Sims, and Barbara Berrong, all of Murphy; four grandchildren, Jessica King, Michael Barnett, Jamie Oliver and Ginger Barnett; five great-grandchildren, Micheala Devine, Wyatt Hopkins, Kelia Oliver, Jordan Oliver and Morgan Oliver; and three great-great-grandchildren, Thomas and Caroline Devine, and Mason Mathis.
    Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept.4, in the chapel of Ivie Funeral Home, Murphy, with the Rev. Noah Crowe officiating. The interment was in the Peachtree Community Cemetery. Pallbearers were Jamie Oliver, Michael Barnett, Wyatt Hopkins, Charles Devine, Chris Green and Danny Rich. Honorary pallbearers were Sammy Berrong and George Savugot.
    The family received friends from noon-1:45 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 4, at Ivie Funeral Home, Murphy, prior to the services.
