Murphy, Hiwassee Dam volleyball teams begin playoffs

UPDATE: Murphy knocked off Gray Stone Day on Thursday night 22-25, 25-11, 25-17, 26-24 to advance to the 1A Western Regional semifinals Saturday at Community School of Davidson at 4 p.m.

Now that is how you make a statement in the playoffs.

The Murphy Lady Bulldogs (21-0) quickly disposed of their first opposition in the 2017 1A state postseason Tuesday night, sweeping the visiting Mount Airy Lady Granite Bears 25-20, 25-14, 25-14.

"I was a little concerned, since we didn't play a ball game for a whole week. But, I think it may have actually helped us," said Murphy head coach Nikol Edwards. "We practiced really hard, but we also took some to rest and remember why we're here."

Murphy (No. 4) will now host Gray Stone Day (No. 5 seed, 23-0) on Thursday at 6 p.m. The Lady Knights swept Hayesville on Tuesday night, 25-16, 25-17, 25-18.

"We didn't know a whole lot about Mount Airy, but it's like I've said before: if we play the way we're capable of playing, it should be a good game," Edwards said.

Hiwassee Dam eliminated

At the western tip of Cherokee County on Tuesday night, the Hiwassee Dam Lady Eagles (14-9) were unable to capture the magic that was occurring within the city limits, falling to the Pine Lake Preparatory Lady Pride (No. 9 seed, 20-7) by a final tally of 15-25, 15-25, 11-25.
