Murphy’s Gentry inducted into National Hall of Fame
Bismarck, N.D. – It might be 1,493 miles from Murphy to Bismarck, but David Gentry looked right at home.
The historic coach of the Murphy High School Bulldogs was recognized on a huge scale Tuesday night, as he was inducted into the National High School Athletics Coaches Association’s Hall of Fame at a ceremony in Bismarck, N.D.
Gentry took over the reins at Murphy in 1983 and in that time, has amassed eight 1A state championships, 11 Western Regional titles and 15 Smoky Mountain Conference crowns.
He needs just six wins to tie the all-time record holder in North Carolina – the late Jack Holley – as Gentry will enter the 2019 campaign with a career mark of 406-193-2. Of those wins, 349 have came during his time at the helm of the Bulldogs.
