    Wilma Eva Nell Hatchett Hughes, 94, passed away Friday, Nov. 17, 2017, at Union County (Ga.) Nursing Home.
    Eva Nell was born Aug. 24, 1923, to Julius Wellons ‘Bill’ Hatchett and Willie Pauline Hampton Hatchett at her Grandfather Merritt Allison Hampton’s home in Brasstown, Clay County.
    She attended school at Ogden Elementary, Martins Creek Elementary and Murphy High School, graduating with the Class of 1942.
    While attending school at Murphy, Eva Nell was a copy editor on the school’s first annual, Leaves From The Old Oak. She was a member of the Murphy High Glee Club as well as the 4-H Club.
    She always loved to sing. She and her sister, Mary Lou, sang at different functions to raise money for war bonds in early 1942. Eva Nell attended Erlanger Nursing School, Chattanooga, Tenn., in 1942 to early 1943. There she was “Capped” but did not complete her last course of study.
    Then she got married. Eva Nell was married to her lifetime love, Hollis Dan Hughes, on Feb. 27, 1943.
    In 1956, Eva Nell and Dan bought a small country store in Bellview. She was a major partner in running the store until 1998. She had a “green thumb.” She grew beautiful flowers everywhere and made the store place a showcase that everyone admired.
    Eva Nell was a lifelong member of Bellview Methodist Church and held numerous positions in the church as well as serving on many church boards and committees. Plus, she was a permanent member of the choir.
    She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a son-in-law, Schley Burrell Jr.; and an infant grandson, Paul Allen Burrell.
    She is survived by her two children; son, Harry Daniel Hughes and wife, Bivian and her daughter, Delores Ann Hughes Burrell Gash and husband, Dale.
    Also surviving are five grandchildren, Sean Hughes and wife, Joyann, Kristin Baer, Traci Burrell-Henderson and Tamera, Kimberly Odom and husband, Jeff and Heidi Kirby and husband, Tony; and several great-grandchildren.
    Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Monday, Nov. 20, 2017, in Bellview United Methodist Church with lay minister Bill Hughes officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Pallbearers will be Heidi Kirby, Johnny Hatchett, Jeff Odom, Ian Burrell and Kenny Henson. Honorary pallbearers will be Terry Hatchett, Reid Hopkins and Jacque Devereaux.
    The family received friends from 6-8 p.m. Sunday at Ivie Funeral Home in Murphy, where the body was until placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the services.
    In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made in memory of Wilma Eva Nell Hatchett Hughes to the Bellview Methodist Church Cemetery Fund, PO Box 1425, Murphy, NC 28906.
    Ivie Funeral Home, Murphy, was in charge of all arrangements.
