Novella Hayes Dockery, 89, of Murphy, passed away Thursday, May 19, 2016, at Murphy Medical Center Nursing Home.
She was a native of Cherokee County, and the daughter of the late Raymond and Nina Mashburn Hayes.
Novella was a homemaker. She had been involved with various churches in the Piedmont area as a Sunday school teacher, choir member, singing in different groups and as a soloist in her 80s. Novella was a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Quinton Dockery; three brothers, James Hayes, Raymond Hayes Jr. and William Hayes; and three sisters, Bessie McLeymore, Mamie Hargreaves and Georgia O’Dell Poirer.
She is survived by her daughter, Allene Moore and husband C.H. of Murphy; one brother, M.G. (John) Hayes of Murphy; sister, Margie Kephart of Murphy; one grandaughter, Teresa Bowleg and husband Frederick; one grandson, Andrew Moore; two great-grandchildren, Anthony and Diana Bowleg-Swan; five sisters-in-law; one brother-in-law and a host of nieces, nephews, friends, loved ones and special friends of the Hayesville House.
Funeral services were held at 4 p.m. Sunday, May 22, at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Murphy. The Revs. Edward Carter and Steve West officiated. Music was provided by the Ebenezer Choir. Burial was in the church cemetery. Pallbearers were Tom Kephart, Phil Kephart, Max Shipman, Kevin Carter, Michael Carter and Wayne Dockery. Honorary pallbearers were Paul Dockery and David Hayes.
The family received friends from 4-6 p.m. Saturday, May 21, at Townson-Rose Funeral Home in Murphy, where the body remained until placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the service hour.
