Monica Stiles

    Monica Sudderth Stiles, 38, of Murphy, passed away Saturday, Sept. 8, 2018, at her home, surrounded by family and friends.
    She was a devoted mother, wife, daughter, sister, aunt and friend.
    Monica was an excellent cook, enjoyed traveling and was full of life.
    Monica was passionate about education. She was a teacher assistant at Murphy Elementary School, where she gave 16 years of service educating children and doing a lot of behind-the-scenes work with her God-given artistic ability.
    She was active in many civic groups, where she volunteered numerous years and countless hours devoted to youth mentorship, creating strong community bonds and raising cancer awareness.
    Monica was a former board member for both One Dozen Who Care Inc. and the Andrews Housing Authority. She also was captain of The Can Do Girlz, her beloved Relay for Life team.
    Monica was a member of Hopewell Baptist Church. Throughout her devastating battle with ovarian cancer, Monica was a devoted Christian who let her light shine even in the darkest of times.  She was one of the bravest people God has ever created. Beautiful, powerful, strong-willed yet full of grace – Monica was simply exquisite.
    She was a native of Cherokee County, and the daughter of Sandra Stirewalt Sudderth and the late Steve Sudderth.  She was also preceded in death by her grandparents, Slim and Arletta Stirewalt; Margie Lloyd Sudderth and Oliver Sudderth.
    In addition to her mother,  she is survived by her husband, Dustin Brian Stiles; daughter and love of her life, Arletta Nora Stiles; in-laws, Terry and Marsha Stiles; and sisters, Lindsay Stiles, Veronica and Courtney Sudderth. She also leaves behind a host of family members and friends.
    The family received friends from 5-7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 11, at Townson Rose Funeral Home in Murphy. Funeral services were held immediately following at Townson Rose Funeral Home Chapel. Pastor Bill Maughan officiated. The eulogy was given by Shannon Spurling. Music was provided by Teresa Ricks and Marie Oliver. Honorary pallbearers were The Can Do Girlz: Jackie Stiles, Wendy Woods, Crystal Sluder and Teresa Ricks.   
    The Monica Sudderth Stiles Memorial Scholarship Fund has been created at United Community Bank, 116 Peachtree St., Murphy, NC 28906.
    In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to support her daughter, Aletta’s, college fund and preserve Monica’s legacy of commitment to education and excellence.
