Max Payne

    Max Payne, 88, of Brasstown, passed away Friday, March 9, 2018, at a Murphy care facility after a brief stay.
    He was a native and lifetime resident of Clay County.  
    Max had served in the United States Navy. He had also served as a Clay County commissioner for several terms.
    Max was a founding and lifetime member of Hiawassee River Bass Club. He also was one of the original board directors for United Community Bank.
    Max was a major supporter of Brasstown Volunteer Fire Department and had volunteered much of his time to the Brasstown community.
    Max was a member of Little Brasstown Baptist Church.
    He was the son of the late Loye Reagan and Flonnie Wilson Payne. He also was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Jennifer Mease; a sister, Ruth Garner; and a brother, Jerry Payne.
    Surviving are his wife of 66 years, Margie Payne; three daughters, Debi Mease and husband Gary of Hayesville, Linda McKeever and husband Bill, and Diana Brown and husband Andrew, all of Brasstown; two brothers, Kirk Payne and wife Sherry of Brasstown and Steve Payne and wife Mary of Hiawassee, Ga.; seven grandchildren, Nathan Mease, Emily Price, Lindsey Strong and Lilly, Asher, Will and Ellie Brown; three great-grandchildren, Hayden and Lyla Price, and Mitchell Strong. He also is survived by several nieces and nephews.
    Funeral services were held at 4 p.m. Sunday, March 11, at Little Brasstown Baptist Church with the Revs. Aud Brown, Jimmy Hogsed and Jimmy Rogers officiating. The interment was at 11 a.m. Monday, March 12, in Little Brasstown Baptist Church Cemetery. Pallbearers were Mike Logan, Allen Hayes, Bill Ledford, Freddie Cook, Tommy Nichols, Mike Cook and Clay Logan. Honorary pallbearers were members of Hiawassee River Bass Club.
    The family received friends from 2-3:45 p.m. Sunday, March 11, at Little Brasstown Baptist Church prior to the service.
    In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the Hiawassee River Bass Club, Justin Nichols Scholarshop Fund, 622 N.C. 69, Hayesville, NC 28904.
    Ivie Funeral Home, Hayesville, was in charge of all arrangements.
