John Ross Dockery, 66, of Murphy, passed away Saturday, Feb. 20, 2016, at Mission Hospital in Asheville.
He was a native and lifelong resident of Cherokee County, and son of the late Ervin and Maebell Killian Dockery.
John was a U.S. Army veteran. He was a bridge inspector for the N.C. Department of Transportation. John enjoyed hunting, fishing and riding in the mountains.
He was a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Jennifer Killian.
He is survived by his wife, Janice Dockery; one daughter, Shannon Greathead and husband Shaun of Murphy; one sister, Carolyn Hatchett of Murphy; four grandchildren, Tierra Gibson, Kandi Kasa, Misti Killian and Cristi Killian; and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 24, at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Murphy. The Revs. Lawrence English and Jake Easter will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery with military graveside rites conducted by V.F.W. Post No. 10222, Joe Miller Elkin American Legion Post No. 96 and DAV Chapter No. 73, and American Legion Post No. 532 of Hayesville and VFW Post No. 6812 Hayesville. Pallbearers will be Scott Cornwell, Stacy Cornwell, Samuel Cornwell, Jonathan Bates, Cory Kasa and Jason Killian. Honorary pallbearers will be Rodney Bates, Maxey Dockery, Stuart Dockery, Jeff Dockery, Shaun Greathead, Loren Dockery, Terry Killian and Kenneth Dockery.
The family received friends from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 23, at the Townson-Rose Funeral Home Chapel in Murphy, where the body lay in state 30 minutes prior to the service hour.
