Helen Elizabeth Hampton Lochaby, a lifelong resident of Murphy, died Saturday, Feb. 6, 2016, at her home surrounded by her family.
Helen, the daughter of James Hilary and Bessie Tuttle Hampton, was a graduate of Murphy High School and Brevard College.
She began her working career with TVA during the construction of Fontana Dam. In 1964, she acquired Murphy Nationwide Insurance Agency, retiring in 1988.
A longtime member of Murphy First United Methodist Church, Helen was active in the Helping Hands Circle, United Methodist Women, The Sharing Center, and held numerous volunteer positions within the church.
She enjoyed gardening, canning, freezing and sharing the fruits of her garden, as well as reading, watching sports, and traveling far and wide with her children.
In addition to her parents, her husband, Lucius Frederick Lochaby, preceded Helen in death after 54 years of marriage. Her sisters and brother, Marcella Hampton Smith, Ruth Hampton Smith and James Sherman Hampton, and her daughter-in-law, Mary Helen Hatchett Lochaby, also preceded her in death.
Helen is survived by her five children, Ann Lochaby Lowder (Sam) of Charlotte, Freddy Lochaby of Murphy, Sharon Lochaby of Belmont, Joe Lochaby (Brenda) of Ann Arbor, Mich., and Litchfield Park, Ariz., and Lynn Lochaby Hansen (Jeffery) of Belmont; five grandchildren, Todd Lowder (Heidi) of Haute-Rivoire, France, John Lowder (Katie) of Charlotte, Hilary, Austin and Grayson Hansen of Belmont; three great-grandchildren, Chloe and Thomas Lowder of Haute-Rivoire, France, and Nathan Lowder of Charlotte; and several nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews, all whom she dearly loved.
Services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, Feb. 8, at Murphy First United Methodist Church. The Rev. Rob Rollins officiated. Burial followed at Hampton Memorial Cemetery. Pallbearers were Gerald Hampton, Austin Hansen, Grayson Hansen, John Lowder, Todd Lowder, Jay Smith, Robert Smith and Mark Ware.
The family received friends from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 8, at Townson-Rose Funeral Home, Murphy, prior to the service.
