Mr. Carol Wifford Hamby, 86, of Emerson, Ga., died Sunday, April 3, 2016, at his residence.
Born Aug. 13, 1929, in Hiwassee Dam, he was the son of the late Readle Hamby and Bonnie Gutherie Hamby.
He was a veteran, having served in the U.S. Army, and was a member of Montgomery Lodge No. 426 AF&AM in Murphy.
Mr. Hamby also was a member of International Association of Bridge, Structural, Ornamental and Reinforcing Iron Workers Union Local No. 387 for 68 years.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time with his grandchildren.
Mr. Hamby worked hard and had strong work ethics.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Billy, Alec, Kenneth, Leonard and Wayne Hamby; his sisters, Juanita Shelton, Regina Stiles and Kay Worley.
Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Margaret Hamby of Emerson; his children, Cathy Hamby and Herbie Strickland of Cartersville, Ga., Stacey and Dwayne Woods of Taylorsville, Ga., and Wifford Hamby and Tammy Dillard of Rome, Ga.; his grandchildren, Tiffany Hamby of Macon, Ga., Shannon and Missy Stiles of Adairsville, Ga., Steven Woods of Taylorsville, and Zachary Woods of Taylorsville; his great-grandchildren, Kaitlynn Stiles, Haley Stiles, Dixie Kinslow and MaKayla Kinslow; his sisters, Betty and Jerry Beavers of Morganton, Ga., and Lucy and Terry Ware of Murphy; along with his brother, Danny and Ramona Hamby of Murphy.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Thursday, April 7, at Oak Grove Baptist Church in Murphy, with military honors and masonic rites. The Rev. Shannon Stiles officiated. Mr. Hamby lay in state from 1-2 p.m. at the church prior to the service. Interment followed in the church cemetery.
