Burke Edward Moore, 80, of Murphy, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 27, 2017, at his residence.
Burke was born in Murphy on Sept. 4, 1937. He was a 1968 graduate of Western Carolina University.
Burke taught for 30 years in the Cherokee County Schools. He was a teacher at Ranger Elementary School for two years, principal at Unaka School for four years, White Church School for four years and Murphy Elementary School for 19 years.
After retiring from education, he worked in management at Taco Bell, Piggly Wiggly Markets, Long John Silvers and United Grocery Outlet. Burke’s last job was working with Wells & West of Murphy.
Burke appeared in the Outstanding Educators in America, Who’s Who in North Carolina and Personalities of the South. He was a member of the Principal’s Division of the North Carolina Association of Educators, and past president of the Murphy Civitan Club, where he had perfect attendance. Burke also was a leader of the Boy Scouts for many years.
Burke was a Ruling Elder Emeritus at Providence Presbyterian Church (PCA) in Murphy.
He was the son of the late Thomas Cloe and Miriam Gray Moore, and husband of the late Patricia Kaylor, who died Feb. 24, 2010, after nearly 48 years of marriage. He also was preceded in death by a son, Burke Edward Moore Jr., who died July 17, 1985.
Surviving are a daughter, Katrina Palmer and husband Edward of Murphy; two grandchildren, Elizabeth Hartness and husband Charles and Ethan Palmer and wife Nichole, all of Murphy; two great-granddaughters, Alaina and Leah Palmer; a sister, Betty Jean and husband Bud L. Brown of Lenoir; a brother, Tom and wife Shirley Stiles Moore of Simpsonville, S.C.; a sister-in-law, Dianne Kaylor Byers and husband Jerry of Palm Coast, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 30, in the chapel of Ivie Funeral Home, Murphy, with the Rev. David Hina officiating. The interment was in Sunset Cemetery with the Rev. Larry Wilson officiating. Pallbearers were Ethan Palmer, Charles Hartness, Geoff and Josh Grubb, Zack Stockbridge, Chad Jones and Steve Yount.
The family received friends from 6-8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 29, at Ivie Funeral Home, Murphy.
