Murphy baseball sweeps doubleheader, wins first state title

Burlington – Even five hours from home, Mother Nature could not leave Murphy alone.

But that didn't stop the Bulldogs from claiming their first baseball state championship with a sweep over West Columbus on Saturday night.

After being rained out Friday night, Murphy had to sweep a doubleheader Saturday to make it home in time for graduation, and the Bulldogs did just that.

They needed a late rally in Game 2 to do it, as Joey Curry drove in Lucas Barolet to tie the game in the top of the seventh. Murphy seized the moment in extra innings, scoring four insurance runs highlighted by a two-run Caleb Irwin triple to win 8-5.

Murphy came from behind to win Game 1 as well, taking a 7-5 decision after trailing by three runs twice in the game. That game was delayed by a couple of hours in the middle by more rain.
