MLK breakfast set for Monday morning

Texana – Fellowship, prayer and singing will fill the Texana Community Center north of Murphy on Monday morning during the 26th annual Martin Luther King Jr. Prayer Breakfast.
Organized by the Texana Community Development Club, the program will begin at 8 a.m. Club President Eurial Turner said the public is cordially invited to attend. Breakfast will be prepared and served by the club’s members.
This year’s theme will encompass “Unity – time to build bridges.”
“This prayer breakfast we hope to pray for unity and stating building bridges, to bridge those gaps as we move forward not only as a community, but as a nation,” Turner said.
Shirley Brooks, a native of Murphy, will be the keynote speaker for the morning’s program. She attended Texana Elementary School and graduated from the Charles M. Hall High School in Alcoa, Tenn. She then earned her certificate of business administration at Tri-County Community College, followed by a certificate in business at Asheville-Buncombe Community College.
While growing up in Murphy, Brooks was an active member of Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday school.
She now works as a crisis ministry assistant and serves on the board of directors at the Asheville-Buncombe County Christian Ministries. Additionally she is a prayer counsel member for God Only Ministries in Woodstock, Ga.
The rest of the program will include singing performances and group prayer.
“It’s an opportunity to fellowship with those in the community and also surrounding areas,” Turner said.
