Patterson hired as SRO, will not take school board seat

Former jail administrator Mark Patterson is unlikely to ever take office as a school board member.
Patterson has been hired as a school resource officer for Cherokee County with a start date of Monday, Dec. 3, the same day he was to have been sworn in as a member of the Board of Education after being elected on Nov. 6.
State law prohibits Patterson from working for the school system and holding a seat on the board. The relinquishing of the seat has nothing to do with his resignation from the Cherokee County Detention Center, which came earlier this month in the wake of allegations of impropriety at the facility by former employees.
Filling the seat will now fall on the Cherokee County Republican Party.
