Scout picks up 13 state honors

Murphy – The Cherokee Scout, Cherokee County’s primary local news source since 1889, picked up a total of 13 awards during the N.C. Press Association’s 2020 Better News & Journalism Contest.

Every member of the Scout’s full-time news team picked up at least two honors in this year’s contests. Winners were announced Friday during an online virtual conference.

“It’s always an honor when people from across the state pay attention to what’s going on in Cherokee County,” Scout Publisher & Editor David Brown said.

“We’re proud that many people know this area in part because of its award-winning community newspaper. It’s nice to see everyone’s good work recognized.”

Here is the list of honors.

First place

  • Staff Writer Samantha Sinclair, “Murphy man stuck at sea,” Beat Feature Reporting.
  • Assistant Editor Penny Ray, “Homeless man killed in Andrews,” Breaking News Coverage.
  • Staff, Celebrating Our Veterans 2019-20 magazine, Special Section.

Second place
