    Deadline for submission of items for the community calendar is 3 p.m. Friday. Items received after that time will be set for the appropriate calendar the following week.


    Tax Aide and IRS-certified volunteers will assist low- and moderate-income individuals of all ages especially 50 and older with free federal and state income tax preparation and filing from 1-5:45 p.m. Wednesdays and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursdays, Feb. 5 through April 9, at Murphy Public Library, 9 Blumenthal St. Make appointments at the library or by calling the office at 837-2417.     January Storytelling will be held Friday at John C. Campbell Folk School in Brasstown featuring morning song from 7:45-8:15 a.m. with Alan Sirmans, Kanute Rarey and Turner Guidry.     The next open mic night,  “Stories on the Square,” sponsored by Mountain Area Storytellers, will be held from 6-7:30 p.m. Friday at the Corner Coffee and Wine Shop on the courthouse square in Hayesville.     A three-session Girl Scout troop series for girls K-5 will be held at the Murphy Public Library’s community room, 9 Blumenthal St. in Murphy.     DivorceCare is a caring group of people who will walk alongside you through separation or divorce. The 13-week series will run from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 22, through Wednesday, April 15, at the Sweetwater Campus, 108 Sweetwater Church Road in Hayesville.  Registration is $20 each for the workbook.     State Employees’ Credit Union will offer tax preparation services to eligible members beginning Wednesday, Jan. 22. SECU tax preparers will be on hand in all 267 locations across the state to answer questions, and complete and electronically file 2019 federal and state income tax returns for members who are eligible to participate in its low-cost tax preparation program.     The Brasstown Volunteer Fire Department is hosting a discourse on “Stress Management, Mental Health and Wellness for the First Responder, family and residents” beginning at 6 p.m. Monday, Feb. 3, at Brasstown Community Center, 225 Settawig Road in Brasstown. Special guest speaker will be Elizabeth Adamovich, behavioral health consultant.
