Local Beer of the Week: Fruit of a Loon
This new weekly feature in the Cherokee Scout will take a look at beers brewed in Cherokee County over the summer.
Name: Fruit of a Loon
Brewer: Tom Rodeck of Hoppy Trout Brewing Co. in Andrews
Style: New England style IPA
Alcohol by volume: 7.1 percent
Food pairing: Grilled food
Description: Hoppy Trout’s Fruit of a Loon offers a refreshingly fruity take on the traditional New England IPA with vibrant mango, tropical and stone fruit notes. The high percentage of wheat malts gives the beer a characteristic cloudiness, while adding a creamy texture.
Despite the citrusy aroma, the beer tastes almost floral with a piney bite at the end. The beer’s light wheat body and smooth flavor makes it a perfect drink for cooling down during the summer’s brutal heat.
Tom Rodeck, co-owner of Hoppy Trout and brewer of Fruit of the Loon, recommends pairing the beer with typical grilled food, like hamburgers and bratwursts. The fruity New England-style IPA emerged into the Northeastern United States brew scene, inspiring him to jump on the bandwagon.
“It turned out really good,” Rodeck said. “I was surprised how bold the flavor was.”
