Hiwassee Dam – A perfect season was capped by a perfect ending Oct. 8 when the Murphy Bulldogs middle school cross country team took home a Smoky Mountain Conference title.
The only blemish on perfection – calling it a blemish is a stretch – was the team just missing the lowest score possible, finishing with 18 points (15 is the best).
Led by Brooks Brown’s individual victory, the Dogs finished in eight of the top nine spots. The black and gold wave that crossed the finish line was good enough to place Murphy well ahead of county rivals Hiwassee Dam/Ranger in second.
Hiwassee Dam/Ranger finished with 57 points, well ahead of Swain in third with 89, Robbinsville in fourth with 104 and fifth place Cherokee at 145.
Brown took the individual honors in the boys race just ahead of best friend Brice McKeon, the two having dominated most of the boys races for the past two seasons.
Hiwassee Dam/Ranger top finisher Cody Totherow broke up the Murphy parade by running well to take third, just ahead of Bulldogs Kaseon Hooper, Mark Cambranis, Kody Bernier, Jeff House and Larry Worsham, who filled out the fourth through eighth spots.
Hiwassee Dam/Ranger’s large contingent of runners also produced a number of strong finishes, including Michael Kocher (10th), Gage Horchler (13th), Enoch Christopher (14th), Ben Smith (17th), Orrin Moore (23rd), James Posey (27th), Tyler Forrister (33rd), Josh Rhodes (36th), Luke Beavers (41st), Thai Welborn (45th) and Hunter Woods (50th).
In the girls race, it was a copy of the high school season to date, with Robbinsville dominating the event to win with 31 points. The Hiwassee Dam/Ranger girls gave the schools a pair of second place finishes, totaling 77 points to edge Swain, which finished with 79. Murphy was fourth with 88 points.
Alex Lovingood from Hiwassee Dam/Ranger led the local contingent with a
strong run into eighth place, just ahead of Murphy’s Chelsea Quinn in ninth. The rest of the Hiwassee Dam/Ranger team included Kendall Haney in 11th, Kayla Farmer in 14th, Stacie Farrow in 21st and Ashley Raper in 23rd. For Murphy, it was Megan Palmer in 16th, Sara Wheaton in 19th and August Westmoreland in 20th.
Following up on the success at the conference tournament, the Bulldogs took on, and beat, a top middle school field of 19 teams at the Mountain Invitational, held at Unicoi State Park in Helen, Ga.
The Dogs total of 80 points was good enough for the top spot, beating out North Hall (84) and Athens Christian (102). Brown was once again the top finisher for the Dogs in fifth place, just ahead of McKeon, who took sixth. Bernier ran a good race to earn a top-20 spot in 17th, and the team score was rounded out by Hooper in 25th and Cambranis in 30th.
