George Henry Spangrude, 85, of Murphy for 28 years, went home to be with the Lord and reunited with his loving wife, Annetta Mae (Maddux) Spangrude, on Saturday, Dec. 10, 2022. George passed away in the comfort of his home with son David holding his hand.
George was born Feb. 19, 1937, in St. Paul, Minn. His loving parents were the late Viola Lila (Machulda) Spangrude and George Randolph Spangrude.
He is survived by brother Gene Spangrude and his wife, Cassie; brother Gerald Spangrude and his wife, Kim; son Daniel Spangrude and his wife, Martha; granddaughter Cristina (Spangrude) Espinosa and husband Jose with great-grandchildren Geovany, Alexander and Maximiliano; grandson John Spangrude and wife Keri Clemens with great-grandchildren Zayden and Makai; and son David Spangrude.
George and Annetta were high school sweethearts, later united in marriage on Nov. 21, 1959. Much like his wife, Annetta, George led a varied life and ever- changing career, spanning the length and breadth of the United States from Minnesota to California, Montana, Pennsylvania, Hawaii and Arizona; and finally settling on Murphy in retirement.
He served in the U.S. Navy and the Reserves. He was an electrical engineer and later an instructor, and worked for Mountain Bell, IBM and Civil Service for the government on missile guidance systems.
For a period in Pennsylvania he left the work force to create a ministry with wife Annetta, served as a halfway house for teen mothers, and fostered troubled teens.
He flew lightweight aircraft as a hobby, played the alto saxophone, and liked to tinker with repairing small appliances.
George was laid to rest privately at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens on Sunday. The family plans to honor both George and Annetta with a memorial service next Spring.
